Luther Seminary educates leaders for Christian communities across the country and around the world. An innovator in theological education, the seminary is committed to exploring leading-edge approaches for Christian ministry, proclamation, and faith formation in a rapidly changing world. As one of the seven seminaries in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Luther Seminary has educated more than one-third of ELCA pastors, lay professionals, and leaders of many global Lutheran and ecumenical churches, with millions more reached annually by digital ministries including God Pause, Enter the Bible, Faith+Lead, Word and World, and Working Preacher. That commitment to innovation includes the Compelling Word Initiative, a five-year, Lilly Endowment-funded project exploring what makes preaching compelling through sustained listening to preachers and sermon hearers. Building on research with more than 2,000 participants, Compelling Word is strengthening and expanding Luther Seminary’s offerings in preaching through certificate programs, Faith+Lead collaborations, advanced study in preaching, and intensive learning opportunities for working preachers.

Leading a church can feel overwhelming when you’re trying to balance the budget while ensuring there are enough resources to do the ministry God has called you to do. Financial uncertainty often leads to long meetings focused on budget cuts instead of inspiring members to grow their giving.

The team at Jana Swenson Consulting comes alongside church leaders to guide and equip them with practical tools, ways to think about stewardship ministry year-round, and options for growing the resources they need to fund their ministry.

Rev. Jana Swenson, a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE), began her career in pastoral ministry, spending 15 years preaching, teaching, administering the sacraments, and visiting the sick. She understood that budgets and annual appeals were part of leading a congregation, but viewed them as a necessary evil.

That changed in 2008, when a campaign consultant helped her see fundraising as a ministry—a way to invite people into the joy of giving and into the work God was doing through her congregation.

Since then, Jana has committed herself to helping church leaders find ways to make inviting members to invest financially in their church natural, relational, faith-based, and effective—so they have the resources needed to fund the ministries they’ve been called to lead.

Spirit in the Pines is owned and operated by St. Andrew. It is located about an hour north of Brainerd, Minnesota on beautiful Pleasant Lake. The property was purchased in 2001, and since then a wide community has grown with people coming from all over the west metro area. We have recently expanded our off-season operations, and we have enjoyed hosting events for other churches and organizations from late August through early June. We love hosting family reunions, weddings, youth retreats, staff or men’s and women’s retreats, ice fishing groups, and more! We are very flexible with what we offer to serve your group. For example, groups can cook for themselves, or we can provide meals. You can view our Property Video and our Rate Sheet for Bookings, and we are happy to work within your budget.
